In just under a month, Jake and I will have been married 6 years, together 9. I’m sure many of you can relate when I say, time together has to be a deliberate decision most of the time with two kids and a busy life. So over the years, Jake and I have found ways to slip time together into regular otherwise boring tasks.
Every other week, we grocery shop together. I know this doesn’t sound like a romantic thing to do, but for us it is a time to laugh and just be together. We’ve found that this weird bi-weekly tradition is something we look forward to.
It’s kind of a big production too. We spend time prior to our trip getting a list together, setting a budget and couponing as well. Then, we find someone to hang with the girls and we go, for a few hours just the two of us. When I used to go by myself, I would always stop at the McDonald’s right by our local grocery store and grab something to eat and a shake. Without fail, I get so hungry when I shop, so I would grab something to tide me over and get a little time to myself. When we started to notice that our alone time together was suffering, I asked Jake if he’d like to go with me, just this once to get a little time to talk. He agreed, and our tradition was born.
It’s become our mini-date night. We grab our fries and shakes and sit for literally 20 minutes just being us again. Having kids strains different parts of a marriage, so getting in time with you spouse, regardless of what it looks like is of paramount importance. It gives us time to regroup as a team and get the wheels back on track for the week.
McDonald’s shakes hold a very special place in my heart for this reason. We get excited to try the new things McDonald’s rolls out and this month, with the Shamrock Shake is no different. Jake is a huge fan of the iconic green shake and I get to stick a little closer to my usual with the new Chocolate Shamrock Shake! This past Thursday, we left the kids and took of on our bi-weekly adventure together. We stopped, grabbed our snack, had an actual grownup conversation then headed to the grocery store, green shakes in hand!
I hope we are able to keep with our tradition as we get older. Getting dressed up for a fancy dinner is great and needed sometimes, but in between those nights, we enjoy our simple pleasures and time together.
How do you squeeze in time with your spouse? Do you have a weekly tradition? Which Shamrock Shake would you try?
