While we are working on Back to School prep in our home, Summer is pretty much still in full swing here. This means a ton of dirty clothes, messy faces and a generally disheveled lifestyle. As a rule, and I am not proud of this, I am usually not the one who grants the girls permission to go out and have a field day in the mud. I have been known to be a selfish, fun ruin-er momma and tell my girls no muddy puddles simply because I didn’t want to add to my mountain of laundry.
This Summer though, I made the decision to let my kids be kids. After all, it will be freezing before we know it and what is an extra load of laundry? As frequent readers will know, I took it upon myself to throw the girls, their cousins and friends a Back To School party a couple weeks ago. All of the kids had a lot of fun, got pretty dirty and overall it was a success. The kids ran through sprinklers, had a water balloon fight and it was a lot of fun watching them enjoy themselves. (It is also possible, I was more carefree than normal because just three days later I was scheduled for surgery. I may have already thrown my hands in the air…we will never know.)
The clean up for the party was a snap. I did a lot of DIY things, including the bags for this post! But most everything was toss-able. Into the trash it went once the party was over.
Of course, the kids clothes, towels and bathing suits were all stained with grass, sopping wet etc. all® POWERCORE™ Pacs OXI made that clean up a snap as well! I just tossed everything into the wash, and used one of their pacs, everything came out smelling fresh, not grass-stained and brighter! My easy going Summer attitude has bled from my parenting to my homemaking, and I’m definitely not mad about it.
Now, as far as the party favor bags- these were easily the most high maintenance part of that get-together. But I really wanted them to be cute, match the decor and be kind of a play on school lunch bags. I wont lie, watching the kids be kids and tear them to shreds to get to the goodies inside hurt my soul, a eensy weensy bit.
For this DIY, you will need the following:
- Brown (or white) paper bags
- Tissue paper
- A hole punch
- white paint
- Alphabet stencils
- Goodies (for filling)
So these are easy, they are just time consuming. I made 12, and it took me about a day to get them done. Of course with a two year old, I can’t sit and craft my heart out at once, it takes many breaks in between.
First things first, cut however many squares of the tissue paper that you’ll need. I made 12 bags, so I need twelve aqua squares and 12 of the gold polka dot tissue paper squares. I didn’t make them perfect, these were kind of shabby chic inspired.
Next, if you are layering the squares like I did, glue them on. Set the bag to the side and let it dry completely.
Once you’ve done that to all of your bags, it’s time to monogram them! This can be done with a white sharpie, I just had a hard time getting the paper not to rip, so I opted to paint over the stencil. I monogrammed each bag, and let them dry.
After all the bags were dry, and after I filled them with the goodies, I got to work on the the tops of the bags. Fold each top down like you would a lunch sack. Just be sure it’s a crisp fold. Holding the fold down, punch 8 holes into the fold. Once you’ve done this, measure your twine, and tissue paper against the length of the top of the bag. Cut long strips of each. Next, weave them through the holes. Once I had weaved through to the other side of the bag, I tied the end off and left a little ‘tassle’ down one side of each bag. I thought it added a bit more character to them!
As far as what I put inside of each bag, they were all back to school themed. So each kid got pencils, erasers, the usual. But I also found cute miniature play doh, stickers etc. The kids really liked the bags!
I would say, my summer of letting kids be kids has been a great success! From a fun party, to letting them get down and dirty when they want to, I’ve done okay.
