Allergy Woes

So Piper turned 8 weeks yesterday…and boy has it been a whirlwind. She is probably the cutest thing I have ever seen…except of course for Addie- who looked exactly the same at Pipers age.

She recently started smiling and ooo-ing and ahhh-ing. I am in love.
But the one thing we have struggled with, that we didn’t really with Addie is that she has food allergies. I don’t think I have mentioned this here yet, but I am not breastfeeding. That is for a different day though.
Anyway, we started her off on Enfamil Gentlease. We chose this one because it was easy on Addie’s tummy and worked well so we thought it was a good starting point.
I am slightly ashamed that it took me as long as it did to realize that Piper was having a reaction to the formula. Though, the hints were subtle. Patchy, plaque-like rashes on her forehead and serious congestion were the two things that finally tipped me off one night. Both are symptoms of a lactose allergy. Aside from those, there was her fussiness, her gas and clay like poo. Jake is lactose intolerant so after some thought, we decided to switch her to a soy formula.
After starting the soy (Enfamil prosobee) formula, we saw a GIANT difference in her overall demeanor. She was happier and not as gassy. Her rash on her face almost cleared up completely and the congestion was gone in a day. But, she became constipated. no more clay poo, were talking barely able to push into it hard.
After trying prune juice a couple times, her poo was still hard and you could tell she was really uncomfortable all the time.
Now we are a couple days in to Similac Alimentum, a hypoallergenic formula. Piper is happy as can be, pooping normally and her rash is almost completely gone. She is still fussy at times, but usually it is just because she wants to be held. She isn’t inconsolable like she was. And this mom is so glad.
This has been a rough 8 weeks of trial and error but I think wet finally figured out what works for Piper. I am hoping she grows out of the allergy but if not, at least we know now and will be able to adjust her diet accordingly as she grows.
Now, if I could just get her to stay calm and happy when shes sitting in her bouncer…that would be great. My house is suffering so badly because a certain baby wants to be held constantly.
Have you dealt with formula allergies? What worked for you?

Ps: if you would be so kind as to head over and LIKE the new facebook page– I would greatly appreciate it!

I’ve been lactose intolerance since the day I was born and I’ve never had or heard of constipation as a symptom. In fact most of my family are lactose intolerant. Typically it’s massive gas, belly pain, bloating, and loose stools or diarrhea (some times foamy poop). In newborns it can be severe foamy diarrhea, diaper rash, vomiting, dehydration, weakness and irritability, and slow weight gain.

It took my mother and grandmother about 8 months to find out why I was so sick as an infant.I was placed on every type of formula (even goat milk) that was available in those days. There weren’t soy or rice option in the early 80’s. I ended up using mocha mix which is a non-dairy creamer.

Hope you guy find something that works. I’ve read food allergies can take up to two weeks to get completely out of the system so there’s that.

Baby wear. It saved my sanity. I baby wore all the time and it helped so much. Now Sam is all over the place and he’s pretty content with not needing to be held ALL the time like before.

Oh I am so glad to see you are doing well!! I have missed being on here to read about your precious family OF FOUR.

We did breastmilk just long enough to realize it wasn’t gonna happen, then regular formula long enough to realize it wasn’t gonna happen and soy with some prune juice did the trick for us. I’m glad you found out what the issue was before it got worse!

I wore HG a little bit, mainly just cleaned as fast as lightening.
